Most people believe that all Muslims are terrorists especially after the attack of 9-11. This is a common misconception because there are actually very few extremist groups that commit acts of terrorism. The Qur'an contains a part that these extremists use to excuse their actions when it was never intended to be interpreted that way. 9-11 caused people to blame the entire religion of Islam for the few extremists that commited the terrorism acts.
Another contemporary issue is the definition of the word jihad. It is believed that it means Holy War and that Muslims are violent beings. It actually means a struggle or to strive in the way of God. The Qur'an doesn't promote violence. Violence is the last option when someone defends Islam.
A very controversial Islamic issue is the treatment of women. Islamic women are treated very well. They are treated as equals by men. Islamic women even recieved their voting rights before American women. Women make their own choices, such as what they wear and who they marry, themselves. They choose to dress out of reverence for God.
Of course there are exceptions to these issues which only add fuel to the flame. There are groups of Muslims that are violent as well as terrorists and mistreat women.
